چکیده

We propose a conceptual model of groupware functionality. It distinguishes four basic functions a groupware application can provide to its users: support for conferences, for cooperation, for conversation and for coordination. We identify the main parameters of these basic functions. We demonstrate the application of the model by describing various categories of groupware applications in terms of the basic functions. For a particular groupware application, we illustrate that the model can be used to analyze and describe its functionality systematically. The model contributes to a structured and comprehensive overview of groupware functionality and to the analysis and design of generic groupware functionality.

Groupware Plug-ins: A Case Study of Extending Collaboration Functionality through Media Items

Groupware normally offers only fixed functionality, which can be a poor match to the actual needs of particular group. We argue that groupware should be extensible by third party developers, and describe groupware plug-ins as a method that enables this. Using the Community Bar (CB) as a case study, we illustrate an easy-toprogram extensible groupware architecture. Unlike single user plug-ins, C...

Towards a Groupware Didactic - Experiences from the Training of Groupware in Cuparla

The adoption of groupware in organizations is the result both of targetted organizational and technical interventions and the spontaneous and unplanned appropriation moves of the users. Training ist the core of a groupware (organizational) implementation. Here the targetted actions of the implementors and the unplanned appropriation by users meet and the resulting contradictions need to be reso...

Exploration environments: supporting users to learn groupware functions

Explorative learning plays a major role when users face new functionality. Nevertheless, the multi-user character of groupware makes explorative learning more difficult. Users are often unable to understand the way certain functions work because they cannot perceive the effects of the functions’ execution. This problem gets more severe with tailorable groupware. Therefore, we propose exploratio...

Flexibility Mapping Synchronous Groupware Architectures to Distributed Implementations

Design-level architectures allow developers to concentrate on the functionality of their groupware application without exposing its detailed implementation as a distributed system. Because they abstract issues of distribution, networking and concurrency control, design-level architectures can be implemented using a range of distributed implementation architectures. This paper shows how the impl...
